Smith was an attorney, real estate agent and small business owner before being elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in 2005. Smith is a member of the Court Appointed Special Advocate Board, Cuba Chamber of Commerce, Grace Community Church, Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri State Bar Association, National Rifle Association, Salem Area Community Betterment Association Board and Salem Chamber of Commerce. He is also the president of the Salem Future Farmers of America Alumni Association.
