Garamendi represented California's 10th Congressional District in the U.S. House from 2009 to 2013. Garamendi began his political career in 1974, serving in the California State Assembly until his election to the California State Senate in 1976. Prior to his election to the U.S. House, Garamendi also served as lieutenant governor of California from 2007 to 2009.

Garamendi endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic primary in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

John Garamendi was born in Camp Blanding, Florida. Garamendi earned a B.A. from the University of California at Berkeley in 1966 and an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1970. His career experience includes working as the deputy secretary of the United States Department of the Interior, a businessman, and a rancher. Garamendi served with the United States Peace Corps.
