The largest producer in the UK
Chapel Down owns, leases and sources from 1,023 acres (414 ha) of vineyards in South East England, of which 750 acres (304 ha) are currently fully mature, making it the largest wine producer in the UK. The Company sold 1.4 million bottles of wine in 2022, revenue is generated from off-trade, on-trade, export, and direct to consumer e-commerce and retail sales.
Leading English sparkling wine brand
Chapel Down continues to build its status as the leading brand of the English wine industry, supported by its high-profile partnerships as the ‘Official English Sparkling Wine’ of England and Wales Cricket Board and Ascot Racecourse, amongst others. Its wines are well regarded by leading wine writers and in international wine competitions, with 28 medals being awarded in 2023. The Company also welcomes approximately 60,000 visitors a year for winery tours and tastings at its brand home and retail experience in Tenterden, Kent.
Broad distribution
Chapel Down’s multi award-winning wines are widely available across leading retailers, including Harrods, Majestic, Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Tesco and Sainsbury’s, with a growing market share to 38% in the off-trade in 2023. The wines are stocked in over 2,000 leading hospitality outlets, including The Pig hotels and Tom Kerridge’s Hand & Flowers restaurant. The brand has a strong direct to consumer business, through its e-commerce website and brand home in Tenterden. The company is growing its international business through travel retail with its wine available at Heathrow, Gatwick, London City and Eurotunnel among others, as well as exporting to 14 markets including the USA and Scandinavia.
Talented management team
The highly regarded management team is led by CEO Andrew Carter, who has extensive premium drinks experience at Treasury Wine Estates, Bacardi and Chase Distillery, and is supported by a hugely talented Board led by Martin Glenn. In September 2022, Rob Smith joined the Board as CFO. Rob is a Chartered Accountant who has held Senior Leadership roles in Finance spanning 13 years as a PwC Partner. In addition to well-known institutional investors, significant shareholders in Chapel Down include Michael Spencer and Nigel Wray.
